Professor Lancaster’s work focuses on human brain development and evolution, using cerebral organoids (3D brain tissues generated from stem cells) to investigate how the human brain develops and what distinguishes it from the brains of other species. Her lab also uses these models to study neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and intellectual disability, and the cellular and genetic mechanisms underlying these conditions. Lancaster pioneered the development of human cerebral organoids and has received numerous awards for her contributions to stem cell and developmental neuroscience.
