Anna Penn, M.D. Ph.D. is the L. Stanley James Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University, the Division Director of Neonatology and head of an active research laboratory. Over the past 20 years, she has developed expertise in neonatal development, neonatal neurology, placental biology and fetology, and is recognized as an originator of the field that she dubbed “neuroplacentology”. This work started with a 2009 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award focused on the development of novel genetic models to assess the impact of placental hormones in fetal brain development. Her lab uses novel perinatal brain injury models and human specimens to investigate placental hormones that alter neurodevelopment. Her work is supported by NIH and SFARI, among other sources. She has held faculty positions at Stanford University, Children’s National Hospital/George Washington University and most recently Columbia University in New York City.
